Changing your political status

What are the steps to start the process

1. Write your affidavit, make several copies (you’ll need them for your notices), and have them all notarized.
   
2. Write a short cover letter and mail it with one copy of your affidavit to:
   
   U.S. Department of State
   2201 C St., NW Washington, DC 20520
   ATTENTION: <current secretary of state>
   
3. Mail certified with green card signature receipt.
   
4. Mail out notices to your sheriff, mayor, coroner, chief of police, district attorney, county supervisor, public health, city council, election supervisor, child protective services, and any others you feel need to be put on notice.
   
5. Update your passport.
