Social Security

My understanding is that nationals can still contribute to and benefit from Social Security, and that you still contribute even if you no longer pay federal income tax.

However, is it possible to cancel SSA payments if desired?

There are no instructions on the SSA website. This is as close as it gets: https://www.ssa.gov/faqs/en/questions/KA-02214.html

Obviously things get dicey if you were to somehow cancel your SSN. Is there a way to stop payments and keep your SSN?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I would guess that there is a way to remove oneself from SSA.  I would also guess that when one removes themself from the SS system, they probably would need to give up their SSN. The problem is that so much is connected to your social security, although it's my understanding that being in the Social Security system is not a nexus or affects the national status for someone.  How long have you already contributed to your SS account?

Only a few years.

If it doesn't get refunded, it's not a big deal.

It seems like you could get an ITIN instead of a SSN for purposes of having a bank account and that kind of thing.
