Is the definition of “national” the same as the definition of “American national”?
A “national” has the same definition as an “American national,” but they are not nationals of the United States or a U.S. national. The term ‘national” can be found in both the United States Code, specifically Title 8, Chapter 12, Section 1101, and can also be referenced in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The term “national” is considered a statutory term, whereas the term “American national” is generally considered a non-statutory term. The term “American national” can be referenced in 8 U.S. Code § 1502.
