US as Federal Governent

I understand that the federal government calls itself the US.

For example, "US-sourced income" is income made working for the government, and "working in the US" means working in Washington DC.

However, I can't remember what source I got this from and I'm getting lost searching for it.

Does anyone have any case law references that define the US as the federal government or Washington DC?

I have been wanting to know that also. This topic is my biggest hangup in the whole process. Thanks to anyone who can give more info
