Should I let my driver's license expire?
We would never advise anyone to drive without a current driver's license. There is a lot of controversy surrounding traveling as a national, but this is a decision you should make for yourself. There is no reason to let your driver's license expire; it will not change your status as a national if you decide to contract with the Department of Motor Vehicles. If you are stopped by law enforcement, you will be asked to show your driver's license, and we think it is wise to comply.
You could offer your new passport card (or your certified copy) as ID, but if it isn't what they will accept, be prepared to give them your current driver's license and other documents that they want to see.
Don't get caught in the trap of being labeled as a "sovereign citizen." The side of a highway isn't the time or place to educate the policy enforcers.
